Save Saxonhouse campaign successful!Saxonhouse needed its ridge renewing and also its thatch to be given some thorough TLC in order to survive into the next few years. The thatch keeps the rest of the building secure from the weather and prevents the building itself deteriorating. It was time for the thatcher to be called and money to be found for this technical job.
To this end, in January 2016, we decided to turn to crowd funding using Kickstarter. We were not sure how people would respond; would anyone want to help to fund this? Kickstarter is, of course, an all or nothing campaign, so we had the excitement and anxiety about whether we would reach our target! Our son, Arthur, also raised money through another campaign in China which involved sponsorship of a long walk. Well we were astonished by people’s generosity and enthusiasm. Not only by the donations – for which we are tremendously grateful, but by the messages of support, the progress enquiries, the rallying calls of those re-posting to their own message boards and to Twitter. We were delighted in April 2016 to announce that we had raised the required £3000 and the thatcher was with us in early summer. We decided that the extra money raised will be used replace outworn artifacts and to fund further projects, which will enhance the Saxonhouse experience. We will keep you all updated about these.
