Wildlife

A haven for wildlife

We are often made aware that Saxonhouse is not just an archaeological experiment or a lovely place to share with friends, students and visitors. It is also the home – or the route to a home – of a whole variety of wildlife.

Foxes  - and their cubs in Spring - can frequently be seen both on the wildlife camera and in person. It is quite easy to get to know them by their different appearance and personalities. Badgers are shyer – although the foxes treat them with respect, as they stand for no nonsense – but visit quite frequently some years, especially if we have put out peanuts: a treat all the wildlife loves.

Roe deer pass through from time to time as they make their way to and from local copses. Grass snakes travel between our compost heap and the pond.

There is a wide variety of birdlife to be spotted. Some of our favourite sightings are of: the owls – tawny, barn and little - the green woodpeckers, the sparrowhawk, the heron, the jays and, of course, the buzzards! And - fantastic- a beautiful kingfisher who has started to visit the pond this year!
